Description
Very high corrosion resistance
PPR copper fittings have excellent corrosion resistance. The PPR plastic side never corrodes. The copper side forms a protective patina. Example: these fittings last 50+ years in normal water.
Plastic side is completely immune
PPR is a thermoplastic polymer material. It does not react with water or minerals. No rust, no oxidation, no pitting occurs. PPR copper fittings have zero corrosion risk on the plastic end.
Copper’s natural protection
Copper oxidizes to form a green patina layer. This patina is stable and very thin. It stops further corrosion from progressing. PPR copper fittings rely on this self-healing protection mechanism.
What is dezincification
Dezincification attacks brass, not pure copper. Brass contains zinc which leaches out over time. PPR copper fittings contain no zinc at all. Example: a brass valve may fail in 5 years; a copper fitting lasts 50 years.
Resistance to acidic water
Water with pH below 6.5 is aggressive to metals. It attacks steel and zinc materials readily. Copper resists acidic water much better than brass. PPR copper fittings survive in pH 6.0 water easily.
Resistance to alkaline water
Water above pH 8.5 is also problematic to some metals. Scale deposits form on many surfaces. PPR is unaffected by high pH water. PPR copper fittings handle pH up to 10 without damage.
Example: old house with copper pipes
A house built in 1970 has copper plumbing inside. The pipes are still intact after 50 years. They show green patina but no leaks occur. PPR copper fittings would perform identically in this situation.
Example: aggressive city water
A city has very soft, acidic water conditions. Residents replace brass valves every 3 years. PPR copper fittings installed 10 years ago remain perfect. The copper patina protected them from corrosion.
Galvanic corrosion with other metals
Dissimilar metals in contact cause galvanic corrosion. Steel and copper together create an electrical cell. The steel corrodes quickly in this situation. PPR copper fittings isolate the copper side with plastic.
Chlorine resistance
Chlorine levels up to 2 ppm are safe for copper. Swimming pools and city water use similar levels. Higher chlorine can attack copper over time. PPR copper fittings are safe for residential chlorinated water.
Hydrogen sulfide risk
Sulfur compounds corrode copper very rapidly. Hydrogen sulfide turns copper black and brittle. This occurs in some well water conditions. Polypropylene-Random copper fittings are not suitable for sulfur water.
Final corrosion summary
PPR copper fittings are highly corrosion-resistant for normal water conditions. pH range 6.5 to 9.5 is completely safe. Chlorine up to 2 ppm causes no problems at all. No zinc means no dezincification risk exists. The plastic side is entirely immune to corrosion. The copper side forms a protective patina layer. Avoid hydrogen sulfide and extremely low pH levels. Use them for city water, tested well water, and plumbing systems. With proper water chemistry, expect 50+ years of reliable service. Example: a better choice than brass for aggressive water conditions.
