Description

PEX-EVOH pipes are not recommended for compressed air systems. They are primarily designed for water applications. Compressed air has different requirements and risks. Example: most manufacturers explicitly exclude air applications.

Permeability concerns

Air molecules are smaller than water molecules. They can permeate through PEX walls over time. This causes gradual pressure loss in the system. PEX-EVOH pipes are not gas-tight for long-term use.

Safety risks

Compressed air contains energy that can be dangerous. A pipe failure can cause serious injury. PEX can burst catastrophically under air pressure. PEX-EVOH pipes are not rated for compressed air safety.

Pressure rating confusion

PEX-EVOH pipes have a 100 psi water pressure rating. Air systems often exceed this pressure. The rating is for water, not air. PEX-EVOH pipes have different strength under air pressure.

Oxygen barrier is irrelevant

The EVOH layer blocks oxygen for corrosion protection. Compressed air does not need oxygen barrier protection. The barrier adds no benefit for air systems. PEX-EVOH pipes are over-specified for this application.

Example: workshop compressed air system

A mechanic wants to use PEX for air lines. The system runs at 120 psi continuous pressure. PEX-EVOH pipes are not approved for this use. The plumber recommends copper or steel instead.

Example: portable air compressor setup

A homeowner uses a small portable compressor. The air lines are short and low pressure. PEX-EVOH pipes might work temporarily but not safely. Manufacturers advise against this use.

Codes and standards

Most plumbing codes do not allow PEX for air. Building codes require specific air-rated piping. PEX is not listed for compressed air service. PEX-EVOH pipes do not meet air system standards.

Oil and contaminant resistance

Compressed air often contains oil from the compressor. Oil can degrade PEX material over time. The EVOH layer is not oil-resistant. Cross-linked Polyethylene – Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer pipes are not suitable for oily compressed air.

Temperature effects

Compressed air heats up during compression. The air can reach high temperatures in the lines. PEX softens above 95°C. PEX-EVOH pipes may fail under combined heat and pressure.

Alternative materials

Copper is commonly used for compressed air lines. Steel and aluminum are also suitable. Cross-linked Polyethylene – Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer pipes are not a recognized material for air.

Final compressed air summary

Cross-linked Polyethylene – Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer pipes are not suitable for compressed air systems. They are designed and rated for water only. Air permeation causes pressure loss over time. Safety risks include catastrophic pipe failure. Building codes generally do not approve PEX for air. Oil contamination degrades the material further. Temperature and pressure combinations can cause failure. Use copper, steel, or aluminum for compressed air. Example: always use materials approved for your application.
